From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Prayer seems to come more easily to children, who are not as hung-up on the formalities of talking with God as grownups can be. So goes the philosophy of Brooks, who here gathers children's prayers from around the globe. He arranges numerous entries into thematic sections such as "Mealtime Graces" and "Prayers for Nighttime," offering a brief introduction to each category. Throughout, Gomez's textured, mixed-media artwork introduces imagery from different countries and cultures, as well as such universally recognizable objects as fruit, bread, moon and stars. The stylized design often rolls the art across a spread, offering varying perspectives. A prayer from India about a hen protecting its chicks under its wings is accompanied by a memorable painting of a large white hen shielding two sleeping children, while bold red tail feathers depict Indian motifs. This accessible anthology celebrates such common themes of prayer as love and gratitude, and also the diverse ways they are expressed. All ages. (Jan.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. A good prayer makes you think, and it may even make you laugh! These prayers have been collected from every corner of the world and though the words may differ from country to country, the same universal themes of love, forgiveness, and hope run through them all. There are prayers for night and day, graces for mealtimes, and blessings too. Beautiful illustrations help to make this a perfect first prayer book for young children. From School Library Journal Grade 1-4-A collection of 26 prayers assembled under the headings, Prayers for the Morning, Mealtime Graces, Prayers for Nighttime, and Blessings. A brief introduction and comments at the beginning of each chapter reflect on the place of prayer in our lives. Written in simple, easy-to-read language, the entreaties are recited by children in a variety of lands. From a prayer of thanksgiving, Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest/And let these gifts to us be blessed (Germany), to a request for strength and guidance (Israel), to O God,/Help me never to judge another/Until I have walked two weeks in his moccasins (Native American, Sioux), each selection addresses universal issues and emotions. Dreamlike, decorative paintings that reflect the various cultures greatly enhance the selections and emphasize the books message of inclusiveness. Although such compilations as Lois Rocks My Very First Prayers (2003) and Rebecca Winters Prayers for Children (2005, both Good Bks) are more comprehensive, this offering is a fine addition.-Linda L. Walkins, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Brighton, MA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist PreS-Gr. 1. Prayers can be solemn, of course, but this book makes prayer feel light as air. Brooks has gathered prayers from around the world, grouping them by the time of day: morning, mealtime, nighttime. Interestingly, the prayers are identified by their country of origin rather than by religious association (though Jesus is referenced in several of them). Brooks includes familiar favorites ("Dear God, Be good to me today. The sea is so wide and my boat is so small"), as well as unfamiliar gems: "The bread is warm and fresh, the water cool and clear. Lord of all my life, be with us." The artwork on the spaciously designed spreads is enchanting, capitalizing on the multiple nationalities evoked. Children of all colors populate the pages, and careful attention is paid to the design motifs of different countries, elements that play out through the book, alongside stars and sea, fruits and vegetables, flora and fauna. The introduction shows what the Lord's Prayer looks like in English--and Chinese. Ilene CooperCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved Review AWARDS and RECOGNITIONSCatholic P
